Lago Maggiore Market Guide: Which One is Really Worth Visiting?

The gentle lapping of water in the early morning, the distant calls of traders, and the intense aroma of aged hard cheese, fresh basil, and artisanal honey: the markets on Lake Maggiore are a feast for all the senses. They aren’t staged tourist spectacles, but rather living Italian everyday culture. Anyone strolling here early in the morning, as the first rays of sun bathe the Piedmontese mountain panorama in golden light, will immediately understand the fascination. A visit to a weekly market on Lake Maggiore is a must-do for all our guests!

But the choice is vast, and many an excursion ends not with a delightful browse, but with the frustrating stop-and-go of searching for a parking space. So, which weekly market on Lake Maggiore is the best? And how can you experience the colourful hustle and bustle completely relaxed?

The Sunday Classic: Cannobio Market

For many locals and connoisseurs, the traditional market in Cannobio is the undisputed favourite. Every Sunday, the entire picturesque lakeside promenade (Lungolago) transforms into a vibrant ribbon of colourful stalls. Against the backdrop of historic patrician houses, painted in warm pastel tones, you can stroll right along the glittering water’s edge. Here you’ll find fine cured meats from the surrounding valleys, fresh fish, handcrafted leather goods, and airy Italian summer fashion.

The Downside: Its picturesque beauty attracts enormous crowds, especially in summer. The narrow lakeside road quickly becomes congested, and finding a free parking space in the town becomes a test of patience from mid-morning onwards.

Our Insider Tip: Get up early. The market truly comes alive in the early morning hours. Those who arrive around 8:00 AM can enjoy the peaceful calm before the tour buses descend. After 9 AM, especially in high season, don’t even think about visiting, as parking spaces will most likely be completely full. Pro tip for guests of Lakeview Cannobio: leave the car behind and use our donkey path through the woods. If you must drive: the football stadium offers the most parking spaces, and between 8 and 9 AM, you can usually find a spot there. After the market bustle, be sure to treat yourself to an espresso – Tip: Forneo Zaccheo in Cannobio’s old town. They have excellent coffee and really good baked goods.

The Giant: Luino’s Wednesday Market

It’s an institution: the market in Luino is the most famous, largest, and most visited weekly market on Lake Maggiore. Every Wednesday, almost the entire lakeside part of this small Italian town transforms into a huge labyrinth of hundreds of stalls. The offerings are seemingly endless – from the finest Parmigiano Reggiano and fresh truffles to household goods, clothing, and antiques.

The Downside: Driving to Luino on a Wednesday is a logistical challenge. The roads are congested, and free parking spaces in the centre are scarce. The market in Luino is also so enormous that you’ll find the same products at multiple stalls – its sheer size doesn’t necessarily mean a significantly wider selection than at other markets.

Our Insider Tip: For this excursion, definitely use the water! From Cannobio harbour, not only do regular ferry services operate, but on Wednesdays, there’s also a special water taxi from Cannobio to Luino. The water taxi journey takes less than half an hour and is significantly less crowded than the larger ferries during high season. It’s best to book tickets a few days in advance – the sales booth is on the promenade quite close to the jetties. If you still have to take the car, arrive very early and park in the back part of Luino: near the former industrial buildings, there’s been a very large, well-utilised car park for several years now.

The Relaxed Alternative: Intra Market (Verbania)

If Luino feels too gigantic and Cannobio on a Sunday is too crowded, then the market in Intra (a district of Verbania), held on Saturdays, is the perfect choice. It takes place from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is almost as large as the famous Luino market. However, it feels noticeably more spacious and airy, which means the market rarely seems as overcrowded. It’s one of the few markets in the region where both tourists and locals do their everyday shopping week after week.

Parking Advantage: Thanks to the wider urban structure, the parking situation here is significantly easier even in high summer than in the narrow streets of Cannobio.

Our Insider Tip: Either arrive comfortably by boat or drive completely through the centre of Intra. On the long exit road leading out of town, you’ll usually find easier parking, from which you can reach the market stalls after a short walk (drive through the narrow road below the main road near Tigros, turn right at the end and go up the exit road). After your market visit, a detour to the nearby Esselunga supermarket on Viale Giuseppe Azari is worthwhile; it’s known for its first-class selection of fresh Italian delicatessen products. And another insider tip: after your market visit, wander through Intra’s old town and be sure to visit Casa del Dolce: in my opinion, they have the best small cakes (“Dolci”) on the entire Lake Maggiore!

Smaller Market Gems Around the Lake

Besides the three main crowd-pullers, there are other quieter alternatives on Lake Maggiore that charm with typical Italian flair:

• Arona: The market in Arona on the southern west bank is a wonderful, relaxed alternative. It’s significantly less crowded than Luino or Cannobio but still offers everything a culinary heart desires.
• Ascona: On the Swiss northern shore of the lake, you can stroll along the promenade in chic Ascona every Tuesday. The market is smaller and more exquisite – perfect to combine with an espresso in one of the elegant cafés. On Wednesdays, you can also take the speedboat directly from here to the market in Luino.
