With a length of around 52 kilometers, it leads through “a hundred valleys (cento Valli)”, beautiful landscapes and imposing gorges. The route offers an incomparable variety of natural scenery and makes every moment a true experience.
The journey begins in Domodossola, a charming town in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. From here, the Centovalli Railway winds its way over impressive bridges and majestic viaducts, while you enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The journey takes you through dense forests, past bubbling rivers and charming villages that will enchant you with their authentic flair.

After about an hour and a half you reach Locarno, the terminus of the Centovalli Railway. This charming town, located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Here you can explore the picturesque alleyways of the old town, visit the impressive Piazza Grande or take a relaxing boat trip on Lake Maggiore.
The Centovalli Railway is not only an experience for nature and culture lovers, but also a paradise for railroad enthusiasts. The time-honored carriages, which have been lovingly restored, take you back in time and make the heart of every railroad enthusiast beat faster.
The Centovalli Railway not only offers a charming scenic backdrop, but also numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. Take a hike along the numerous hiking trails or simply enjoy the fresh air and the tranquillity of nature. Numerous exits along the route make it possible to stop off for a hike. For example, right next to Verdasio station, roughly halfway along the Centovalli Railway, you will find two very impressive cable cars. Verdasio-Rasa and Verdasio-Monte Comino are starting points for very beautiful hikes. Tip: take the cable car up Monte Comino and stop off at“Alla Capanna“, a beautiful grotto with a fantastic view from the terrace and delicious homemade polenta. From there you can hike back to Verdasio in about 90 minutes, passing a small picturesque church in a forest clearing. And after the hike and train ride, we recommend relaxing in the Lido Locarno swimming pool.
