However, the decisive turning point came in 1931: The Scottish captain and passionate botanist Neil Boyd McEacharn discovered the estate and immediately recognized its potential. He bought the property with the vision of creating one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.
McEacharn renamed the villa “Villa Taranto” in honor of one of his ancestors, who had been given the title Duke of Taranto by Napoleon.
In the years that followed, he invested an enormous amount of time, passion and financial resources in the design of the grounds. Over 2,000 trees were removed, the grounds were completely redesigned and an ingenious irrigation system was installed that uses water directly from Lake Maggiore.
Despite the interruption caused by the Second World War, McEacharn continued his work. In 1952, the botanical garden was finally opened to the public and quickly became an internationally renowned attraction.
After his death in 1964, the estate became the property of the Italian state, while a foundation is still responsible for its maintenance and upkeep today.
