I often hear the question of whether tap water in Northern Italy, especially here at Lake Maggiore, can be safely drunk. Old, outdated prejudices often still dominate perceptions. People sometimes think you’d better boil water in Italy and never drink it from the tap. While that might still be true in some regions, it’s not the case in Northern Italy at Lake Maggiore. My answer is always a clear yes! The tap water at Lakeview, which comes from Cannobio’s municipal network, is classified as drinking water and complies with all European drinking water regulations. It is of very good quality and can be safely enjoyed directly from the tap. These high standards are common throughout Northern Italy and are subject to strict controls.
Chlorine Taste? A Rare Exception
